Rencontres des Sablons: is AI an existential threat or not? On 7 February, Yannick Bardie, director of the Observatory of Sciences and Societies at the Institut Sapiens, spoke with Jean-François Lucas, managing director of Renaissance Numérique, on the crucial question: “Is AI an existential threat?”.
The discussion took place as part of the “Rencontres des Sablons”, the first think tank forum devoted to major societal issues. During the discussion, Yannick Bardie shared his expertise by analysing the major impacts of artificial intelligence systems on our societies.
He highlighted in particular the risks linked to the mass exploitation of click workers and the extraction of vital resources in certain parts of the world.
While taking these challenges into account, he also shed light on the social and imaginary dimension of so-called “general” AI, stressing that it stems more from a societal construct and a narrative shaped by decades of digital innovation than from any real, concrete technological breakthrough.
